The Mount Vernon District, and all of Fairfax County, lost an influential and well-respected community member this past weekend with the passing of Gerald W. (Gerry) Hyland.

Born and raised in Massachusetts, Hyland moved to Northern Virginia to attend law school at Georgetown University. He then served for more than six years in the U.S. Air Force, earned a Master of Law in taxation from George Washington University School of Law, and continued serving as a reserve officer in the Air Force, retiring as a colonel after 30 years of service.
