From Steve Markle:

A brief note to provide an update on conditions within Gil McCutcheon Park. As many of you may know, Friday evenings horrific storm impacted Gil McCutcheon Park severely. A large oak tree smashed the playground, fortunately the swing set was untouched, and many other trees were felled in the park. I contacted the Park Authority Friday evening and William Douglas, Area 3 Manager, had a work crew in the park bright and early Saturday morning. They have cleared most of the wreckage that was the playground but that area should be avoided. I am told that it is caution taped off. From what I can gather from pictures, yes we are away returning on Monday, four large oaks in and around the field also fell, as well as one that appears to have fallen adjacent to the house garage. I can only imagine the condition of the rest of the forest and suspect that some of the trails are blocked with fallen trees and branches.

After surveying the damage and talking with the county, I anticipating coordinating several volunteer clean up efforts in the park over the next few weeks under the Park Volunteer Team Program. I will also be working with the Park Authority to develop a plan for restoration of the playground.

Many thanks to William Douglas and his crew from Area 3 for the rapid response on Saturday morning, and hope to share more positive news with you soon.

Best Regards,

Steve
