The Fairfax County Park Authority’s (FCPA) Jan. 23 community information meeting on the reopening of the Mount Vernon Rec Center was so popular that the parking lot quickly filled up at Belle View Elementary School. The cafeteria had a standing-room-only crowd for the presentation and open house, according to FCPA spokesperson Ben Boxer, who described it as an “amazing evening” with “tons of great interaction.” Following are several key facts about the facility from FCPA, as well as some feedback from community members and stakeholders.

  • The rec center, which has been closed since January 2023 for renovation and expansion, will feature a bunch of amenities, including two National Hockey League-sized ice rinks, a two-story fitness center, an indoor track, a two-story indoor rock-climbing wall — the first of its kind for FCPA — a pool with beach entry, six multipurpose rooms and drop-in childcare.

  • According to the tentative project timeline, the rec center will reopen in late May, with the exception of the pool, which will open the following month. Sometime in mid-June, FCPA plans to hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
